In Ancient Athens, often called the birthplace of democracy, government officials were chosen by sortition: citizens were selected for public office by lotteries, in order to increase the chances of ordinary, poor citizens being successful. Given the terrible results achieved with our corporate-sponsored money-driven "elections," I say give it a toss. Couldn't be much worse.
