Workers fill a pauper's grave in Illinois. Anecdotal evidence suggests such burials are on the rise in the US, thanks to harsh economic times. In two counties in New York state, Westchester and Rockland, have seen 48 per cent and 79 per cent increases respectively in the cost of indigent funerals since the financial crisis in 2007.
