Poll: 81% of You Distrust Facebook

Google and Facebook: These are the top two most-visited sites globally, according to Alexa.com. In February, statistics portal Statista reported that Americans spend more than 100,000 years per month on Facebook. That's a lot of hours (and years) to spend on a site you supremely distrust.

We recently ran a poll on Internet Evolution asking users which company they trust least with their data -- Facebook or Google. Out of almost 150 respondents, 39 percent said they least trust Facebook; and 42 percent said they distrust both equally.

You can see this for yourself in the beautiful chart I made for you below. (You're welcome.)

The big picture here is that nearly half of people surveyed distrust the top two sites in the world equally, and further that a total of 81 percent of people distrust Facebook more than, or as much as, they distrust Google.

Then there's that 5 percent of you who can't decide. And, sure, while we admittedly didn't have a poll option like, "What is this sillyness? I trust Google and Facebook both totally!" it's also the case that none of the 44 message board comments in response to this poll carried any sentiment of that kind.

The closest we came to an expression of "trust" was this comment from nathanwosnack: "I just blindly trust that the company won't totally screw up or break any laws, or get hacked. And that's as much as anyone else can hope for."

Comforting, indeed. Otherwise, most of those who weighed in said something along the lines of, well, no we don't trust them, but there's not much we can do about it. Thanks for rubbing it in, guys....

Or, as one of our esteemed message board posters, Mr. Roques, put it: "I said I distrusted both equally but after that, I simply went  back to facebook and updated my status, uploaded a picture and chatted with a few friends... while most people distrust an online brand, we haven't made the decision to stop using it... can we?"

That's the irony, of course. According to Facebook's most recent reported statistics, the site has over 900 million registered users. Whether the majority of those users distrust the site or not is, for now at least, beside the point.
