Smartphone app gets trial run aboard final space shuttle mission

Media_httpfarm7static_rwdxp

When the space shuttle blasted off on its final mission, there was one very popular gadget making its maiden voyage: the iPhone.

A Houston company called Odyssey Space Research developed an application for the Apple smartphone that is meant to help the astronauts track their scientific results and perhaps one day aid navigation.

Though this particular item is hoping to see plenty more action in the future of space travel, many other items are hitching a ride, which will later find homes in museums, schools and other organizations to commemorate the historic voyage. Memorabilia includes:

- American flags from a Houston fire station, a Washington middle school and the Delaware Valley Historic Aircraft Association.

- A recipe card from the Kennedy Space Center.

- A number of NASCAR-associated items.

Packing a number of smaller tokens such as coins or flags dates back to the Mercury missions and the souvenirs are then distributed around the country to not only remind us of where we’ve been but of the possibilities of things to come.
