96 Penang Boxing Gym in the Klong Toei district of Bangkok, Thailand.Klong Toei is home to one of the largest urban slums in the world. Residents live in a cluster of corrugated iron shacks, along active railways, wedged between shipping yards and over-passing expressways. Beneath one of those expressways sits 96 Penang, a local Muay Thai gym with a proven reputation for producing champion fighters. Kids of all ages train here. These kids approach the sport with seriousness and dedication well-beyond their years. I take my hat off to them, and to the dedicated people who run the gym, offering the kids of Klong Toei a place to find confidence, self-respect, love and a sense of meaning in a world where drugs, violence, prostitution and death are a fact of life.
