Bernie Madoff's Pants Recycled as iPad Cases

If you are a New Yorker, or if you lost your shirt courtesy of Bernie Madoff, you can finally get a piece of him. Madoff's trousers are being recycled as iPad cases.

The clothes, obtained at an auction held by the US Marshals Service, don't come cheap, of course neither did he. Each item of clothing has been cut up to create a one-off case.

Created by New Yorkers (who else), Frederick James specializes in iPad covers made out of luxury rescued and vintage fabrics such as cashmere, silk, rayon, and wool. They are a fashion statement, not a protection.

The Madoff collection is the ultimate in recycling. His trousers are orange, lined in yellow double-knit wool: is this what he wore to the golf club? In any case, they are made into 2 iPad cases, each using the original pocket. Yours for only $500.

The provenance of the rest of the 16 pairs of trousers is more mundane: Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, and J. Crewe (the net was tightening...).

According to the Toronto Star, 5 Bernie Madoff iPad cashmere covers were sold just before Christmas, mostly by word of mouth to finance and Wall Street types. Also from the auction, they were cut from a navy blue Christian Dior sweater and a Bergdorf Goodman cardigan and went for $500 each.

If you've had enough of Bernie, other iPad covers are available in Hawiian shirts, hunting and ski lodge wooly cashmere, pinstripe suiting, pop art and Wiggley's chewing gum.
