4chan Upsets Reddit in Tribes: Ascend Showmatch

The Giants weren’t the only team to pull off an upset this weekend. In a showmatch broadcast Saturday night on the TribesCast stream, an elite crop of players from Reddit’s  /r/tribes subreddit took on the best from 4chan’s own /v/ Video Game community in the upcoming team-based first-person shooter Tribes: Ascend. When the dust settled and the spinfusors had been flung, the underdogs from 4chan emerged victorious in the best of five series.

The match – dubbed the “Troll Bowl” by caster and Tribes: Ascend competitive manager HiRezBart – played out something like a Disney sports movie if you’re to believe 4chan’s take on the story (and why wouldn’t you?). Reddit’s Diamond Sword team came out strong in the first two games, putting on an incredible display of coordination. Before you could say “Shazbot!”, Reddit had won two quick 5-1 games, putting them in a dominant 2-0 series lead.

But 4chan’s Blood Eagles, who claimed to be a “rag tag group of /v/irgins,” weren’t about to give up the fight. Digging deep for a second wind, 4chan reorganized their game plan to focus on heavy use of defensive deployables – such as force fields and mines – in an effort to disrupt Reddit’s well-coordinated attack. The strategy paid off – Reddit’s offense quickly found the wind taken out of its sails, and 4chan managed to claw their way back in the next three games to take the match.

4chan celebrated their come-from-behind victory in a predictable manner: a flurry of memes, image macros, and the embedding of victory music on the /v/ imageboard.

The streamed match ended up being a huge success, with over 2,000 people tuning in to watch the festivities. With any luck, the highly entertaining match will help in establishing Tribes: Ascend within the competitive and eSports canon.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Tribes: Ascend is a revisiting of the classic hi-speed capture-the-flag shooter from the late 90’s being developed by Hi-Rez Studios. The game utilizes a free-to-play model similar to Team Fortress 2 or League of Legends. Though currently in closed beta, interested players can pick up a beta key and join in by “liking” the title on their official Facebook page.
