Spring has definitely arrived in Washington, DC. The cherry trees and daffodils are blooming and plans are well underway for the National Occupation of Washington, DC (NOW DC)! Here is a listing of some of the events: March 30th – March and rally with Occupy EPA: “Protect the Planet for a Sustainable Future!” We will be joined by Dr. Helen Caldicott and Whistleblowers, Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo and Susan Morris. We will march with live Alpacas and “Snowflake” the polar bear! Bring your family and make a sign that tells why protecting the planet is important to you!
March 31st – Occupy the Department of Education, Backbone Campaign “Bail Out America” Direct Action training, Peacekeeper training, first NOW DC General Assembly and Doo-wop Dance Party!April 1st – Occupy the Department of Education, Backbone Campaign “Bail Out America” Direct Action training and Veteran’s Peace Team training.April 2nd – “Bail Out America” direct action on foreclosures and the Center for the Study of Responsive Law “Controlling the Corporations” strategy conference.April 3rd – “Bail Out America” direct action on student debt and the start of the NOW DC Social Forum. The Social Forum will be held at Friends Meeting of Washington, DC on Florida Ave near the DuPont Circle Metro Station. Please let us know if you are planning to attend this free event by registering on the NOW DC website. April 14th and 15th – a weekend of political speakers and arts and music in Malcolm X Park (Meridian Hill) featuring Junkyard Empire and musicians from Music for Occupy.April 17th – Occupy Congress direct action.April 24th – Occupy the Department of (in)Justice.There will also be movie nights and teach-ins on livestreaming, websites and social media. More direct actions are being planned. All direct action will be nonviolent. If you are interested in learning more about nonviolence, join the NOW DC Peacekeeper team. Contact peacekeeper@nowdc.org.Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks. If you are able to volunteer, please look at the list on the NOW DC website and contact volunteer@nowdc.org. Participants in NOW DC are expected to make their own arrangements for sleeping. There is information on the NOW DC website. A limited number of spaces are available in local churches for $5 per night. Contact logistics@nowdc.org if you want to reserve a space.The goals of NOW DC are to bring people together from across the nation to connect and share experiences, to provide participants with new ideas, knowledge, skills and resources to take back to their communities and to make the issues that are important to Occupy visible to the power structure and the public. Discussions of next steps in the Occupy Movement will be held during the General Assemblies. All who believe in building an independent nonviolent social movement to create a peaceful, just and sustainable world are welcome.
