Boeing experimental drone, designed by company’s engineers to stay in the air for up to four days at a time, accomplished its first test flight above the Mojave Desert at Edwards Air Force Base. The drone, called Phantom Eye has the ability to vastly expand the reach of military spy craft. The longest that reconnaissance planes can stay in the air now is about 30 hours. In the test flight, which took place Friday, the Phantom Eye circled above Edwards at about 4,080 feet above Edwards for 28 minutes, reported The LA Times. Although, the plane had apparently problems experienced after touching down, when the landing gear dug into the lake bed and broke. photo: cafefoundation.org Weaponized Drones Over AmericaAmerican police officers may soon be able to use unmanned aircraft not only for surveillance, but also for offensive action, reported RT News. The drones will be equipped to fire rubber rounds and tear gas. The US military and CIA have used weaponized drones against military targets and civilians overseas for years. Nevertheless, the possibility of having “lite” versions of those remotely controlled killer-machines circling over America is a serious concern and raised opposition among civil rights groups. The American Civil Liberties Union commented in front of the media: “It’s simply not appropriate to use any force, lethal or non-lethal, on a drone… We don’t need a situation where Americans feel there is an invisible eye in the sky.”
