Karl Marx wrote that religion is the opiate of the people. The opiate of the American people has become shopping. Retail therapy. Secular materialism, to my mind, is worse than religion which, at its best, promoted compassion. SM is the
philosophy of the greedy.
Personally, I long for a good, old fashioned Christmas. But that's gone and Xianity is merely another political platform. Christ was removed from American society long ago. So....how about we go all the way and imitate the Soviets? We are very much like them, and grow more so each day.
The Soviets celebrated the winter holiday on New Year's, with pine trees, gifts, food and the like. Santa (remember, Santa was a Saint) was replaced with Grandpa Frost (imagine the economic opportunities here replacing all that Santa schlock with Frost!!). Science, of course, ruled in the Soviet Union. Here we have socialism for the rich which is an elegant distortion of the Soviet system, don't cha think?
Finally, the full quote from Marx: "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." Here the poor and oppressed live without an opiate. Barry's "Grand Bargain" will take even more from the poor to feed the rich.
