When it comes to San Francisco icons, the Brown twins - Vivian and Marian - with their signature matching outfits, dazzling blond hair and even more dazzling smiles, have been as much a part of the city as Coit Tower or the Golden Gate Bridge.

And they likely have been photographed as often as well.

Always cheerful and always well coiffed, the twins made their daily rounds of Nob Hill and Union Square since moving to the city from Michigan in 1970.

Herb Caen wrl.ote about them all the time, and now it's my turn.

It's come to my attention from very reliable and well-intentioned sources that at 85 years old, time has begun taking its toll, and they now will likely have to move to an assisted-living facility.

The problem is that they do not have much money, so finding a suitable place for them in the city may not be possible. It would be a shame if these icons moved outside of San Francisco to live out their remaining years.

Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco is helping the twins. Donations may be sent to their emergency assistance fund at 2150 Post St., San Francisco, CA 94115.

I'm going to help. How about joining me?
