Foreskin Man: Unkind Cut at Jewish Tradition and Jews?
Lisa Derrick Friday June 3, 2011 6:46 pmWords and images just got sharper in the battle against circumcision, as Matt Hess–who founded MGMbill.org, the group behind the Santa Monica, San Francisco and San Diego anti-circumcision bills, released the second issue of the comic book “Foreskin Man.”
In this story, blond, super muscled “intactivist” super hero Foreskin Man (secretly Miles Hastwick, a retired corporate scientist who now heads the Museum of Genital Integrity and throws wild yacht parties with lots of booze and busty babes off the coast of San Diego) does battle against the dark haired, bearded Monster Mohel clad in the traditional Orthodox Jewish wide brimmed hat with a tallis around his neck. Explains the text of “Foreskin Man”:
Nothing excites Monster Mohel more than cutting into the penile flesh of an eight-day-old infant boy.
On the cover of the comic book, one of Monster Mohel’s Uzi-toting, pais-wearing, Israeli-named assistants restrains the distraught mother Sarah as her husband watches the mohel prepare baby Glick for circumcision. A book with Hebrew letters rests next to the traditional wine and goblet on the pool table where the deed will be done. Foreskin Man saves baby Glick, kidnapping him and delivering him to a tribe of intactivists (led by the voluptuous Tia Kumming) who light a bonfire made of stolen circusmstraints, the medical instruments used in hospitals for circumcision. The End.
Charges of anti-Semitism have been leveled: The Jewish Journal says “Foreskin Man”
gives further credence to the accusation that so-called intactivists are in fact motivated by anti-Semitism.
The Jewish Journal quotes Hess:As far as the anti-Semitism charge, I might understand such an accusation if our proposed legislation applied to everyone except Jews. That would be like saying we care about all boys except the Jewish ones…We do what we do because we strongly believe that no one has the right to cut off part of another person’s body without their consent. We believe that amputating part of a boy’s penis is no different in principle than amputating part of a girl’s vulva. If you ask any activist in Africa why she is trying to stop the practice of female genital mutilation, I suspect that her answers would be very similar to ours.Hess had this to say to SFGate’s Debra J. Saunders:
A lot of people have said that, but we’re not trying to be anti-Semitic. We’re trying to be pro-human rights.
Trying not to be anti-Semitic? You’ve succeeded.
